The historic building was constructed in its original form in the 18th century. It used to be a horse changing station for stagecoaches, and after the construction of the railways it functioned as an inn named „Ét- és Táncterem a Pistához” (Stephan's Restaurant and Dancing Room). It was transformed into an orthodox synagogue only in the second half of the 1920s, and functioned as a religious place during only two decades, until 1944. Then it was used as a slaughterhouse, shop, storeroom, and slowly degraded over time.
In 1989 the council of the Bács-Kiskun county offered the location for the creation of the museum. With the help of the municipality of the county of Bács-Kiskun, the National Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments, the Ministry of Culture, and other supporters, we transformed the building for the museum. We have demolished the entire original building following the plans of architect and Ybl-Prize winner Pál Boros, and have rebuilt it like the original, marking with a different colour the new and additional parts. The Hungarian Foundation of Photography (Magyar Fotográfiai Alapítvány) is created in December 1990 by Fényképész Rt. of Budapest with a capital of 2 million forint and by the Association of Hungarian Art Photographers (MFSZ) with a capital of 25.000 forint. The Hungarian Museum of Photography, maintained by the Foundation, opened its doors a year later in November 1991. At the moment, the building contains a space for temporary exhibitions, a book store, a permanent exhibition showing cameras and objects related to photography, a library, a research area, store rooms and other facilities.
